2020 tokyo olympics poster
After researching the arenas, I chose to use the Nippon Budokan as it was originally built for the 1964 Summer Olympics, which had huge historical significance for Japan. The 1964 Tokyo Olympics were the first Olympic games to be hosted in Asia. The occasion was also used as a sign of hope, unity, and remembrance. Born August 6, 1945 on the outskirts of Hiroshima, the day the atomic bombs were dropped, top Japanese athlete Yoshinori Sakai was chosen as the final torchbearer during the 1964 Opening Ceremony, honoring the past while welcoming a hopeful future. Once more 57 years later, the Tokyo Olympics brought the world together in a show of hope after being postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I acknowledged this rich history of growth and unity by embracing a more aged and traditional style of illustration. I created a textured paper background, and used a semi-opaque gouache brush to allow the brush texture to peek through, juxtaposed with the non-traditional sans-serif typography.
